4.3.2.4 Disadvantages of SEA

There are some disruptive factors of SEA for the users as well as for the advertisers. For users it is often difficult to differentiate between the organic listing and the paid adverts. Only 38% of the users know the difference. This decelerates the search for the relevant information a lot.

For advertisers the worst problem is click fraud. Competitors click on an advert to cause costs for the company or to let them run out of budget. This makes the adverts disappear and only the adverts of the swindler stay. The rate of click fraud is currently 15% but decreasing, because companies like Google are developing techniques to discover it. In the US there were judgements against search engines, because they did not do enough to avoid click fraud. That is a reason why in countries like France or Germany the click fraud rate is enormously higher than in the US (Fairline Consulting, 2010).
